With Shipstern Bluff as my home break, I fell for big-wave slab surfing early; I caught my first one at 14, and I’ve been chasing swells around Australia and beyond ever since.

Remote missions demand solid prep and reliable gear. For me, that starts with a Ranger XLT and an MRT Explorer chassis-mount canopy. Simple, tough, and easy to tailor. Day to day, it’s my runabout; when it’s time to go, it quickly turns into a travel rig that carries camping gear, safety kit, boards, and tows a jet ski just about anywhere.

I’ve kept the canopy setup light and practical: an open layout with an 85L fridge and dual battery, plus a streamlined T-section roof that can take a rooftop tent when needed, while keeping drag down. It all proved itself on a three-month road trip to Gnarloo Station, over 20,000 km, no dust ingress, and hardware that held up even when I (accidentally) crossed the Nullarbor with both doors open. Lesson learned: always do a walkaround. The goal stays the same: get to the waves safely, travel light, and keep the focus on the next swell.
