Terrain: Moderate

A mix of unsealed roads, soft sand, and steep soft sand dunes. Navigating sand dunes poses its own set of complications with the fact that they are ever-changing and moving. However, these particular dunes are well marked with poles to guide you.

Two rugged off-road vehicles equipped with MRT X-Series Chassis Mount Canopies parked on a beach, with a picturesque view of the turbulent sea and rocky cliffs in the background. This image captures the essence of adventure and the vehicles' readiness for diverse and challenging environments. The lead vehicle prominently displays its durable build and readiness for sandy terrain adventures.

Morning:
Arriving at the entrance to the Yeagarup Dunes, you will be required to have a national park access permit, which can be bought online or at the check-in station at the entrance. Here you can drop your tyres to about 10-15 psi as well, as the 2WD track in is rough and undulating and you will shortly be at the base of the first sand dune.

The first sand dune climb will require a bit of right foot power and correct tyre pressures. Make sure to engage low range. Selecting 3rd gear will be the best bet. If you don’t make it to the top on your first attempt, reverse back down and try again with more momentum.

From here follow the posts to the beach. The track is easy to follow but can be undulating and bouncy so it might be slow going.

Afternoon:
After the long undulating track to the beach, you pop out onto Yeagarup Beach. To your left, as you enter the beach, you can head towards the Warren River Mouth which is sometimes crossable depending on tides and rain. Unfortunately when we arrived, it was flowing very quickly and impassable. Instead, we headed back north up the beach to find camp.

Be cautious of humps on the beach and pay attention to dips…

Evening:
We found ourselves a stunning protected campsite after doing some exploring, with a nice grassy base. We set up camp and enjoyed the afternoon and sunset before cooking a cracking dinner out of the MRT Canopy – ready for another day of exploring tomorrow!

Morning:
We had a slow morning around camp and made a warm breakfast after a freezing cold night. The exit from the campsite with a bit of a bumpy one and was slightly off camber but made it out with no drama. We continued back up the beach and up the sand hill climb onto the Yeagarup dune system.

Had the Warren River been passable, we would’ve done so and made our way onto Warren Beach and up Calcup Hill, a mighty 1 km long sand dune that poses a fun and heart-racing challenge. For those wanting to attempt it – it’s split into three distinct climbs with the last one being the steepest and most difficult.

Tyre pressures are everything and 10 psi as a minimum is recommended. Start there and see how far you get. After each section, if your car has been really working, you have the chance to rest for a couple of minutes and let it cool back down before heading on to the next section. Once at the top, you can say you have conquered the mighty Calcup Hill!

Unfortunately, that marked the end of our trip so we traversed the undulating track back to the road and aired back up.
