What Trump’s Tariffs Could Mean for Australia’s 4×4 Industry – And for MRT

With President Trump’s latest tariffs now in place, there’s a lot of uncertainty about how these changes could impact Australia’s 4×4 industry. As a business deeply connected to the off-road community, we at MRT are keeping a close eye on how these tariffs could affect not only us but also our customers.

Key Takeaways

  • US tariffs may lead to price increases on imported 4×4 parts and accessories.
  • Australian 4×4 manufacturers and exporters could face reduced demand in the US.
  • Popular Aussie off-road products may become less competitive in the American market.
  • Tariffs on steel and aluminium components could impact product pricing across the board.

A Quick Look at Trump’s Tariffs

President Trump’s new tariffs—dubbed “Liberation Day” in the US—impose taxes on all goods imported into America from its trading partners, including Australia. This move, part of a broader “America First” trade policy, aims to protect US manufacturing but could have wide-reaching consequences for global trade.

For Australian businesses, these tariffs are more than just numbers—they could impact everything from vehicle parts to complete 4×4 accessories. As a leader in the design and manufacture of premium ute canopies, MRT understands that even a small change in trade policy can have a big impact on the market.

What’s a Tariff Anyway?

A tariff is basically a tax on imported goods, designed to protect local industries by making imported products more expensive. For example, a $100 (wholesale) Australian-made snorkel exported to the US would now carry a 25% tariff—meaning the importer has to pay an extra $25 to bring it into the country. While the Australian manufacturer doesn’t directly pay this tax, the increased cost is often passed on to American consumers, potentially affecting demand for Aussie products.

What Products Could Be Affected?

Under the new tariffs, every Australian export to the US will now attract at least a 10% tax. And some products, especially those containing steel or aluminium, will face an even steeper 25% tariff. This includes chassis parts, drivetrain components, tyres, body panels, glass, mirrors, engines, and electrical systems.

That’s a big deal for the 4×4 industry. Just think of how many ARB bull bars, Haltech ECUs, and Harrop brakes find their way into the hands of US off-road enthusiasts every year. With a 25% tariff on these products, demand may well decline as prices rise.

It’s Not Just an Aussie Problem

Ironically, these tariffs also affect US carmakers. While Ford builds most of its cars in the US, GM sources many components from Mexico and Canada—countries now subject to tariffs too. Even Jeep and RAM vehicles, built with parts from Canada and Mexico, are feeling the pinch. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep and RAM, has already announced layoffs and production slowdowns as a direct result.

What This Means for MRT and Our Customers

At MRT, we pride ourselves on building high-quality canopies and accessories that support the 4×4 community here and abroad. While our main market is Australia, we know many of our customers rely on US-made components and accessories.

If US importers see reduced demand or higher costs, that could flow through to Australian buyers—either through price increases or potential delays in supply. And while Australia hasn’t imposed any retaliatory tariffs, the global supply chain is interconnected. We saw during COVID how disruptions overseas can quickly affect prices and availability here.

The Road Ahead

As always, MRT remains committed to supporting the 4×4 community—through quality products, honest advice, and a focus on reliability. We’ll continue to monitor how these tariffs evolve and keep you informed about any changes that might affect your build plans.

If you’re thinking about a new canopy or fit-out, or if you’d like to discuss how to future-proof your setup, get in touch with our team. We’re here to help you get the most from your 4×4—no matter what the global trade winds bring.
