The New Kia Tasman: A Perfect Match for MRT’s Ute Canopies
Drive has just posted details about the highly anticipated 2025 Kia Tasman Ute, and it’s stirring up excitement across Australia. As one of the biggest potential disruptors to the popular Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, the Tasman is set to hit the market in 2025. Kia’s first-ever dual-cab ute could be a game-changer, and here at MRT, we’re gearing up to ensure that our accessories fit the Tasman like a glove.
Kia’s First Dual-Cab Ute – the Tasman
Kia Australia is betting big on its first dual-cab ute, the Tasman, as a way to boost sales and potentially challenge Ford and Mazda for market share. The Tasman marks new ground for the South Korean automaker, but with an official unveiling expected in late 2024, what exactly can we expect from this new contender against the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max?
The name “Tasman” has been confirmed, but the full details on engines, capabilities, and pricing are still under wraps. However, here’s what we know so far.
What Will Power the Kia Tasman Ute?
The Kia Tasman ute is largely expected to offer a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which is already found in the Kia Sorento, producing 148kW and 440Nm and paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is similar to the outputs of the Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 (140kW/450Nm), Mitsubishi Triton (140kW/470Nm), and Nissan Navara (140kW/450Nm).
However, to rival the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, it is likely Kia will aim to increase those power figures. The Ranger’s 2.0-litre twin-turbo unit delivers 154kW and 500Nm, and the HiLux’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel produces 150kW and 500Nm. Matching or exceeding the circa 150kW/500Nm power output could help the Tasman compete, provided it meets emissions standards.
While a V6 version isn’t in the plans for the initial launch, there’s a slim chance that one might follow later if Kia manages to balance its CO2 emissions by selling enough electric vehicles. Kia has also hinted at a potential “Raptor-rivalling” Tasman variant, aiming to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor’s robust 292kW/583Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, alongside other off-road and performance upgrades.
An electric Tasman is scheduled for an overseas release in 2026, and it could arrive in Australia afterwards, considering the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) set for 2025. Meanwhile, the possibility of a hybrid version remains uncertain.
When Is the Kia Tasman Ute Arriving?
Kia Australia is targeting a mid-2025 launch for the Tasman. The journey to this point has been a long one; back in 2017, or possibly even earlier, Kia Australia had been pressing its South Korean headquarters for a ute, and its sibling brand, Hyundai, had been making similar requests since 2015.
Work on the model reportedly began around 2019, with expectations that the Kia and Hyundai utes would share many features as both brands sought to boost local sales. However, updates on the project slowed in 2020 as the world grappled with COVID-19 and the automaker took a more cautious approach.
Then in March 2022, Kia’s global CEO confirmed the development of two electric utes. By November that year, spy photos indicated that one of those utes would also have an internal combustion engine option. Kia Australia revealed to dealers in May 2023 that they were planning to launch the ute under the model code “TK,” with a local release date set for 2025. Shortly afterward, the name “Tasman” was trademarked, and Kia began testing and fine-tuning the vehicle as a direct competitor to the Ford Ranger.
What Will the Kia Tasman Ute Be Capable Of?
Kia has made no secret of its aim to challenge the Ford Ranger, which is widely seen as the benchmark for dual-cab utes. To do so, the Tasman will need to meet key requirements, like a 3500kg braked towing capacity and close to a 1000kg payload, catering to buyers with boats, caravans, tools, and more.
In addition, some new utes on the market offer a tray large enough to fit a Euro pallet between the wheel arches, which is another expectation for the Tasman. Spy shots suggest the Tasman will be larger than the Ranger but not quite as big as full-sized pickups like the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500.
For off-road enthusiasts, the Tasman is anticipated to feature a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a low-range setting, which can operate in 4×4 mode on pavement. The ute will likely include different modes for sand, mud, and towing, enhancing its versatility. Kia Australia will play a pivotal role in developing and tuning the Tasman to ensure its ride and handling are on par with the top-selling models like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max.
What Will the Kia Tasman Ute Cost?
Pricing will be a key factor in the success of the Tasman. Its main rivals, the Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok, and Toyota HiLux, sit at the higher end of the ute market, with top-tier versions exceeding $70,000. For a newcomer to the ute market without the decades of pickup-building experience of Ford and Toyota, this would be a bold price point.
A flagship Tasman priced in the $60,000 range would align it with competitors like the Isuzu D-Max (priced from $32,200 to $67,500), Mitsubishi Triton (from $43,690 to $63,840), and Nissan Navara (from $33,050 to $70,765). However, it is unlikely that Kia will aim for a lower price range to compete with budget-friendly options from brands like SsangYong, GWM, and LDV.
One significant advantage for Kia is its seven-year/unlimited-kilometer warranty, which could offer more peace of mind to buyers compared to its competitors.
How Will the Kia Tasman Compare to Other Utes?
In 2023, Kia Australia sold 76,120 vehicles, placing it fourth behind Ford (87,800), Mazda (100,008), and Toyota (215,240). The launch of the Tasman, however, could shake up this hierarchy.
Kia is aiming for around 20,000 annual sales of its ute, which would surpass models like the Sportage, Seltos, and Carnival, making it the brand’s most popular offering. However, in the highly competitive ute market, even 20,000 sales wouldn’t secure a top-three spot. In 2023, the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Isuzu D-Max dominated with 63,356, 61,111, and 31,202 sales, respectively.
Yet, if Kia hits its target, the Tasman could outperform rivals like the Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton based on 2023 sales figures. Not all these sales will come directly from the ute segment, as some will be “conquest” sales from other brands and models. Nevertheless, adding 20,000 units to its sales figures could help Kia climb to the number two position in the Australian market.
