2025 Ford Ranger PHEV: Flagship Stormtrak to Headline Australian Lineup and MRT’s Compatibility Plans

Ford is bringing the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its popular Ranger ute to the Australian market next year, offering it across various trims and introducing a new flagship variant, the Stormtrak. The Ranger PHEV aims to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to its traditional diesel versions, bringing electric power to key models in the lineup.

The hybrid system will not be exclusive to a single, high-priced model. Instead, Ford is applying a similar strategy to Toyota’s HiLux V-Active mild hybrid, integrating the PHEV technology across core trims. These trims will include the Ranger XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak, which currently come with either bi-turbo 2.0-litre or single-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engines. It’s expected that the PHEV version will be offered as a dual-cab pickup.

In addition to these trims, Ford will introduce the special Stormtrak PHEV variant as the range’s flagship model, featuring Stormtrak-specific elements like “Chill Grey” paintwork, unique 18-inch wheels, and distinctive grille, wheel arch vents, and decals.

Under the hood, the Ranger PHEV features a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with a 75kW electric motor that sits between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford is targeting an electric-only driving range of around 45km, making it perfect for short trips without needing any fuel.

Drivers can choose between four drive modes: Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge, allowing for optimised use of the petrol engine and electric motor. The PHEV models will retain the same 3500kg towing capacity as their diesel counterparts, and they will be the only Rangers equipped with external power outlets—featuring a 2.3kW outlet in the cabin and two 3.45kW outlets in the truck bed.

Production of the Ranger PHEV will take place in South Africa due to tooling constraints in Thailand, and a five percent import duty will be applied, as there is no free trade agreement between Australia and South Africa.

Australian deliveries are expected to commence in 2025. The Stormtrak PHEV will come with features from the Wildtrak’s $2000 Premium Pack, such as matrix LED headlights and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, as well as the $2800 Flexible Rack System.

While Ford has not announced pricing for the PHEV model, it is anticipated to be higher than the current V6 turbo-diesel variants. To give an idea of the price range, the Ranger XLT tops out at $68,840 before on-road costs, the Sport V6 starts from $71,340, and the Wildtrak is priced at $74,840 before additional fees.
