A New Contender in the EV Ute Space: Why the Slate Truck Is Turning Heads

At MRT, we’re always watching the global automotive landscape for what’s next — especially when it comes to utility vehicles. One of the most talked-about recent releases is the Slate Truck, a no-frills electric ute backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It’s affordable, modular, and has the unique ability to convert into a five-seat SUV. If the Slate Truck makes its way to Australia and our customers are interested, you can be sure we’ll be ready to support it with custom canopy solutions, just like we’ve done for the country’s most popular utes.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Slate Truck is a new EV ute designed for affordability and flexibility.

  • It can convert from a two-seat ute into a five-seat SUV using modular kits.

  • Slate is aiming for a starting price under A$42,300, with even lower prices possible via U.S. rebates.

  • If the Slate Truck enters the Australian market, MRT is prepared to develop custom-built canopies to suit.

  • Customers will be able to register interest in MRT canopy options for the Slate Truck once it becomes available locally.

Introducing the Slate Truck: A New Kind of EV Ute

Unveiled over the Anzac Day long weekend, the Slate Truck is the first model from a startup that’s been quietly building support — including from Jeff Bezos. It’s designed as a simple, affordable electric ute that focuses on function and versatility. Starting at around US$27,000 (roughly A$42,300), the Slate Truck aims to make electric utility vehicles accessible to a broader market.

What sets it apart is its modularity. The base two-seat pickup can be transformed into a five-seat SUV using flat-pack kits. These kits come in boxy or fastback styles and are available with a closed roof, open roof, or even without doors — allowing buyers to tailor their vehicle to different lifestyles or work requirements.

Key Specs and Features

  • Powertrain: 150kW/264Nm rear-wheel motor

  • Battery Options: 52.7kWh (approx. 240km range) or 84.3kWh (approx. 390km range)

  • Performance: 0–97km/h in 8 seconds, top speed of 145km/h

  • Dimensions: 4435mm long, 1793mm wide, 1760mm tall

What MRT Will Do if the Slate Truck Arrives in Australia

While the Slate Truck is currently being manufactured in the U.S. — with first deliveries expected in late 2026 — we know many of our customers are already asking: Will MRT offer canopies for the Slate Truck if it comes to Australia?

The answer is yes.

If the Slate Truck enters the Australian market and there’s demand from our customers, MRT will design and manufacture canopy solutions that integrate seamlessly with this unique EV platform. As always, our focus will be on creating setups that are practical, secure, and purpose-built for both work and lifestyle use.

Whether you’re looking to use the Slate Truck as a work vehicle, a weekend tourer, or a hybrid of both, MRT is committed to offering canopy packages that elevate its usability and match our high standards for quality, durability, and custom fit.

Stay in the Loop

As the Slate Truck moves closer to production and possible international availability, we’ll continue to monitor developments. If you’re interested in MRT building a canopy setup for the Slate Truck, we encourage you to get in touch or keep an eye on our canopy packages page for updates.

At MRT, we evolve with the vehicles our customers drive — and we’re ready to innovate if the Slate Truck hits Australian roads.
