Ford Ranger Super Duty Officially Announced
Ford has announced the upcoming Ranger Super Duty, a heavy-duty version of its popular ute, designed to compete with the likes of RAM, Toyota Tundra, and Chevrolet Silverado. This advanced model boasts impressive towing capacities, a revamped suspension, and innovative features tailored for industries requiring robust and versatile vehicles. At MRT we are committed to ensuring full compatibility with this new model, offering a range of premium ute trays and canopies, including our X-Series Chassis Mount Canopy, to maximise its functionality and performance.
Key Highlights of the Ford Ranger Super Duty:
- Towing Capacity: Capable of towing up to 4.5 tonnes, it outpaces the standard Ranger models and the high-performance Raptor.
- Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM): Increased to 4500kg, compared to 3350kg in the Wildtrak.
- Gross Combined Mass (GCM): Delivers a class-leading 8000kg when towing.
- Off-Road Performance: Equipped with high-riding suspension and four-wheel drive for impressive ground clearance and water-wading abilities.
- Smart Features: Includes advanced safety, overhead accessory switches, and compatibility with the Ford Pass smartphone app.
Ford Ranger Super Duty: Built for Tough Challenges
The rugged Ranger is set to strengthen Ford’s range by taking on formidable rivals such as Toyota’s LandCruiser ute and other tough competitors in the segment. The Ford Ranger Super Duty is a major upgrade of the popular Ranger ute, now enhanced to meet the challenges of a more demanding vehicle class. Boasting a towing capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes, the Super Duty offers an extra 1000kg over the standard models and even surpasses the high-performance Raptor by an additional two tonnes. Its improved suspension now supports a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4500kg – a significant jump from the 3350kg provided by the Ranger Wildtrak.
When towing, it manages a gross combined mass (GCM) of 8000kg, which is 1600kg more than most other Ranger variants. Ford is promoting the Super Duty as both robust and versatile, capable of handling heavy payloads and maximum towing loads without compromising its well-known off-road capabilities. Although full technical specifications remain under wraps, the combination of a 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 engine – delivering 180kW and 600Nm – with a 10-speed automatic transmission appears to be an ideal powertrain setup.
The Super Duty is set to join the refreshed Ranger lineup alongside models such as the new Ford Ranger Stormtrak plug-in hybrid. This launch marks a milestone for Ford Australia, as it is the first occasion that the “Super Duty” badge has been applied to a vehicle developed outside of North America. The model has been designed and engineered by Ford’s local product development team, which comprises 1500 Australian engineers, designers, and specialists.
“As we approach launch, we’ll continue collaborating with fleets and vehicle modifiers across Australia to ensure the Ranger Super Duty exceeds their expectations,” said Sondra Sutton Phung, Ford’s general manager of global trucks.
Phung added, “The Ranger Super Duty combines the advanced features and safety of our award-winning Ranger with the heavy-duty capability our customers have been asking for, paired with the reassurance of a factory-backed warranty.”
The model is also expected to incorporate innovative elements from the Ranger range – including overhead accessory switches, practical side steps, and integration with the Ford Pass smartphone app. Thanks to its four-wheel drive and raised suspension, the Super Duty is built to offer excellent ground clearance, impressive water-wading abilities, and reliable off-road performance.
Rather than replacing the US-sourced Ford F-150, the Super Duty is designed to complement it. While the F-150 delivers a more luxury-focused experience starting at $117,000 drive-away, the Ranger Super Duty is positioned as a more affordable, work-oriented alternative. Like the standard Ranger, it will be manufactured in Thailand and distributed globally. Ford insiders expect this tough variant of the Ranger to resonate with industries such as forestry, mining, and emergency services. Andrew Birkic, president and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand, confirmed that the Super Duty is built to handle “all kinds of work.”
