Ram Rampage: Could This Compact Pickup Be Coming to Australia?

Ram’s latest move has the ute world buzzing. The U.S. truck giant has just secured a design patent for the Ram Rampage, a compact dual-cab ute already turning heads in Brazil — and now possibly eyeing markets like Australia.

With shifting consumer demands and stricter emissions regulations on the horizon, the Rampage may just be the right-sized vehicle at the right time.

Key Takeaways

  • Ram has patented the Rampage design in the U.S., fuelling speculation of a broader release.

  • The vehicle is currently sold in Brazil and is smaller than the full-size Ram 1500.

  • It rides on a monocoque platform, unlike traditional ladder-frame utes.

  • Australia’s ute market is evolving rapidly with growing demand for efficient, smaller utes.

  • MRT will be ready with fit-for-purpose canopy solutions for the Rampage if it lands in Australia.

A New Direction for Ram in Australia?

While Ram is known for its larger pickups like the Ram 1500, the Rampage represents a shift. It’s a more compact, urban-friendly ute that’s already selling in Latin America. Built on the same platform as the outgoing Jeep Compass, the Rampage leans into the growing market for small pickups like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz — vehicles that blend SUV comfort with tray-back practicality.

Although Hyundai initially ruled out the Santa Cruz for Australia, it’s now showing interest in the segment. Likewise, Ram’s patent move suggests similar intentions. As Australia’s ute landscape shifts due to the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) and increasing interest in hybrids and EVs, a compact option like the Rampage could fill a much-needed gap.

The Electrification Question

It’s important to note that the Rampage isn’t currently offered with a hybrid or electric powertrain. But with battery-electric and extended-range EV utes from LDV, Kia, Toyota, and Deepal on the way, pressure is mounting for all manufacturers to evolve.

Ram is also working on a larger body-on-frame ute codenamed the “Dakota” — a proper mid-size challenger aimed at rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma. There’s no word yet on whether both the Rampage and Dakota will make it to our shores, but one thing’s for sure: Ram is ramping up for a major product expansion, with 25 global announcements planned within the next 18 months.
