GWM Confirms New 3.0L Turbo-Diesel Engine to Take on Ranger and Everest
GWM is stepping up its game with a new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine in development — a significant upgrade from its current 2.0L and 2.4L offerings. The goal? Deliver more torque and power for customers who need serious muscle under the bonnet.
This beefed-up powertrain is set to make its way into the Cannon Alpha ute, along with the Tank 500 and Tank 700 SUVs. However, GWM has confirmed that it won’t be retrofitted into the current Cannon ute lineup. Launch is expected around 2027.
Key Takeaways:
-
GWM is developing a new 3.0L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine for higher performance.
-
The engine will debut in the Cannon Alpha, Tank 500, and Tank 700.
-
Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV options will complement diesel offerings to meet emissions targets.
-
The Cannon Alpha already features diesel and hybrid versions, with a PHEV variant on the way.
GWM is committed to giving Australian drivers real choices when it comes to powertrains. Speaking at the Shanghai Motor Show, GWM International Vice President James Yang explained the strategy: “We believe the Australian market is best served by a mix of PHEV, HEV, and diesel. While EVs have a role, they won’t suit every use case — especially in regional and remote settings.”
The Cannon Alpha currently runs the same 2.4L engine found in the regular Cannon, producing 135kW and 480Nm — a solid offering, though it still lags behind Ford’s 2.0L bi-turbo four-cylinder, which puts out 154kW and 500Nm. Ford’s six-cylinder 3.0L turbo-diesel in the Ranger and Everest pushes even further at 184kW and 600Nm, giving it the edge in raw output.
GWM’s upcoming engine may not go the six-cylinder route, but it’s clearly aimed at closing the gap in both capability and perception. The brand’s focus remains firmly on choice and adaptability.
“We don’t want to box customers in,” said Steve Maciver, GWM’s Head of Marketing and Communications for Australia and New Zealand. “With NVES standards incoming, every OEM will need to adapt. Fortunately, we’re well-positioned and flexible enough to meet those changes.”
Expect more updates as GWM moves closer to launch. One thing is clear: the brand has big plans for Aussie roads.
